I used to get that exact error message when transferring files from mp3 cd's I made for my car mp3 player onto my computer. These cd's got pretty badly scratched up, and sometimes it would be enough to mess up all the redundancy checking. A working solution I found was to use a old slower external drive. None of this info is probably applicable to you, but might give you some ideas. Horst's idea of formatting might work. You might also try defragging.
