Get Rockbox! It has peak meters and adjustable gain on the player.
But for now...Try a different mic, or a different recorder (with a lower gain).
You can attempt to simulate the conditions by using the mic in close proximity to a hi-fi speaker, and doing some tests at different volume and recording gain levels.
I'm not familiar with the mics or battery box. Does the battery box simply provide power to the mics or does it include some sort of gain/eq circuitry as well?
