Here's something to try for the USB looping problem. Get a mini USB/female USB adapter and wedge a PC hard-drive fixing screw in the left hand side as you look at it attached to the iRiver, shorting out those connections.

Works for me. You can then flash a new firmware and the problem might disappear. For me it came back again so I have the USB adapter permanently attached.
