Consequences of converting T30 to UMS

Hello iriver enthusiasts,

I recently purchased a T30 and was astonished to discover that the ONLY OS it can be used on is Windows XP. I am running Windows 2000 and have no intention of switching to XP anytime soon, so most likely I will be forced to return it and perhaps hunt for a UMS version on ebay.

I understand from browsing the threads here that there are 'unofficial' firmware upgrades that would convert my T30 to a UMS device. I also understand that doing this would void my warranty with iriver, and could possibly limit the line-in recording bitrate of the T30 to 96Kps, something I can't accept since my main reason for purchasing the T30 is for making high quality MP3 recordings (320Kps) through the line-in.

Are there any official firmware releases that safely convert the T30 to UMS, perhaps on the iriver international site? Do they limit the recording bitrate on the T30? Is it even possible to connect an MTP T30 to a win2K machine in order to perform the conversion? If not, I will be forced to return what seemed like the perfect recorder for my needs, along with thousands of other Win2K users.

Thank you for your assistance.
