This may be similar or the similar\same as the ScanDisk solution, but have you tried the Check Disk application through the command prompt? That application was able to isolate the bad sectors on my HDD and allow me to salvage music before I really started to do some surgery on my H340. So, here's what you need to do for the Check Disk (with fix operator).

1) Plug up the iRiver and identify the asigned drive letter
2) Click Start > Run > enter cmd
3) Type chkdsk /r (the /r is the operator that forces automated fixes)

This WILL take a LONG LONG time depending on the number of disk errors and size of your drive, but it (hopefully) will salvage a lot of your music library so you can dive into the formatting.
