I did the same thing to test a "broken" iriver. Thanks to the winch for the inspiration!

You have to start by getting a female connector that is the same as the 1.8" hdd female connector. You can get it from either a broken 1.8" drive, or a CF card you no longer need, or a pcmcia card that you no longer need. I used a pcmcia card. I opened it and cut the circuit board near the connector, then cut some of the connector off caus eit has more pins than you need.

After that you need to solder a crapload of pins to an existing IDE cable. Look at the pics in the first post to get an idea to how the pins map.
