Nope, you're right--all the source code/patching/etc. work is done on your computer, and you need to set an environment for it by downloading some software (as the instructions walk you through). It may seem intimidating, but I think the "How to compile [and patch]" instructions are well written so that one can follow them step-by-step and actually get it all done. I don't think that it is any harder than using Microsoft Word at times (although a heck of alot more intimidating).

And if you have a question, you simply can ask here or at Rockbox.org, or at the Rockbox IRC channel (where the people who really know this stuff hang out--I try not to bother them with my infantile questions, though!).
