SRM I took apart my pmp and was able to get the hdd out. The connection is the same for a laptop HDD. So is it possible to plug it into a laptop [wont fit in my dads ancient one; off by about 3mm ] and reformat it? I have to original system files before it pooped out so if I reformat at put the system folder and whatnot back into the pmp will it reboot successfully?

Isnt it Ironic that you where offended about being called a Noob yet you ask a noob question in a thread on a topic that most noobs dont fully understand?
Answering it, not it wont work as if you where not a noob and had a bit more experience about this topic would know the firmware is loaded in a flash area on the PMP that the average user cant access without using cables not provided by iriver.
Sorry but this is seriously good entertainment due to the irony of it all. You could do what you have said already using your PC as normal to connect the PMP, makes no difference. The sys files are only half of the process
