I'm not so sure that is the situation now or will be by the time we present a version that plays sound (properly or semi-properly) on iRiver.
And if it turns out to be the case anyway, it is just a bigger reason for everyone to join in and help. Rockbox is not "them", it is "us". It becomes what we make it.
Also, there are many other aspects of battery saving than simply how much optimized the codecs are.
