i'm using 4x1.5v AAA disposable rayovac batteries, and there have been no problems. i have charged the player ~10 times with my pack so far, and there hasn't been a single hitch (of course, i had to replace the AAAs to charge it this many times)

exactly that. albeit with AAAs (which only differ in mAh, i believe)
