SyncBox != USBOTG!
From what I understand, a Syncbox would work (in theory) - provided both devices support USB Mass Storage (the iRiver does). You wouldn't get the functionality of USBOTG, however - as the syncbox simply copies X to Y - and blindly. (Disclaimer: Speaking in theory here).
USBOTG on the iRiver device provides a browser and other functions to allow you to pick and choose your files, destinations, etc. It's not perfect, but it does the trick.
The iRiver H3XX only speaks "USB Mass Storage" over USBOTG. Some digital cameras use the "USB Mass Storage" protocol - sadly (for us), many use another standard protocol developed for digital cameras, or a manufacturer specific protocol. Digging in the Device Manager in Windows will help you find what protocol your USB device is speaking if you know where to look.
And, as said a thousand times, devices won't work without some sort of power injected into the connection. To get the power flowing, use any of the mods listed on this site.
(Appearently some hard-drive enclosures and maybe other devices will work without the 5V mods, but you're on your own there. It's safe to generalize and say all devices need the 5V, if only to signal that another device is connected. YMMV, but it'll be dumb luck if it does.)
